Becoming a counsellor is a journey of self-discovery, empathy, and growth—but it can also bring unexpected challenges. During my training, I received an ADHD diagnosis, which completely changed the way I approached both my personal life and my professional development.
Receiving a diagnosis while training was both daunting and enlightening. I had to navigate new ways of organising my time, managing focus, and understanding my emotional responses—all while learning to support clients effectively. It gave me first-hand insight into the experiences many clients face when living with ADHD, anxiety, or similar neurodiverse challenges.
This experience has strengthened my approach as a counsellor in training.
It allows me to connect with clients with a deep sense of empathy and authenticity, particularly those navigating neurodiversity, mental health challenges, or the pressures of personal growth.
Being transparent about my journey helps me model resilience, self-awareness, and self-compassion for my clients. It reminds me every day that therapy isn’t just about guidance—it’s about connection, understanding, and walking alongside someone as they navigate their own path.
